Hello, I Am a Podcast Addict

It hit me today that I listen to a lot of podcasts. Like,a lot of podcasts. All day really. I love pods. I learn lots, I'm entertained, sometimes I'm freaked out. I thought I'd share my top 10 and why I love them.

1. The Birth Hour Podcast -  So I think I've mentioned a few times before that I am going to start Doula classes next month (and if I haven't done that here, surprise!) This pod is all about letting women tell their birth and postpartum stories, the good, the fantastic, the terrible. I love everything about this pod and consider it part of my doula training.

2. Star Talk with Neil Degrasse Tyson - Do I really need to say more than that? this pod is fun and educational and Dr. Tyson interviews a surprising array of people. I learn something every time I listen.

3. Welcome to Nightvale - This was the first pod I ever listed to. I have no idea how to describe this one. Just listen if you like weird and slightly creepy storytelling.

4. Dearest Doula - I guess the reasons for this one are obvious, I love learning how successful doula's manage their practices. I'm happy to take any tips and tricks!

5. Not By Accident -  I only found this pod recently and listened to the whole first season in about 3 days. It's the story of a woman becoming a single mom by choice. I love, love, love Sofie and her daughter and their story.

6. Lucky We Live Hawaii - Practical advice for moving to my beloved islands. The Pod is done by 2 guys originally from the Northeast (one of them from the state I currently live in) who moved to Hawaii 30+ years ago. Now they are both tour guides with their own successful businesses. I love this show because they sugar coat NOTHING about living in Hawaii. Do they love it there? Heck yes, their love for the islands is strong and very clear. But are there downsides? Yup. They are themselves, its like listening to two guys chat about where they live. I love them, get their humor and I appreciate their advice and honesty. I mean a girl can dream, right?

7. The Vanished - There is one of the pods that I love but it freaks me out. The host delves deep into current missing person cases. It's terrifying that in this day and age people are just gone sometimes.

8. The One in a Million Baby - This is an offshoot of a blog that I've been reading for quite a few years. The creator lost her baby daughter to a rare disease (CHARGE Syndrome) and has since made it her life purpose to tell the stories of special needs children and their families. While I may not always agree with her, I always appreciate what she has to say and how she says it. The families stories are always touching and hopeful. Well worth a listen!

9. Autastic: A Comedians Guide to Autism - 2 stand up comics that happen to have people in their families with Autism. This pod is completely unscientific,it's just a dad and a brother talking about their experiences being the dad and brother of autistic people. Lots of love and quite a few giggles on this one.

10. Tell Em' Steve Dave - I'm a huge fan of writer/director Kevin Smith. He isn't on this podcast but 2 of his close friends from childhood are. 2 of the hosts played multiple parts in his first movie Clerks and are currently on the AMC show Comic Book Men with him. (the show is good too but I can't stay up that late)  The third host is Q from Impractical Jokers. I don't quite know when but at some point Q worked for Kevin and that is how he met Bry and Walt. I'm the first to admit that this pod isn't for everyone. It's honestly like listening to 3 or 4 guys bullshit for an hour or so once a week. It can be funny, it can be serious. They all bring what's happening in their lives right now to the table and they talk about it like any old friends would. Between all the bullshitting and teasing you can tell that these guys honestly care about one another, their families and their lives in general. Again, not for everyone, lots of swearing and taking the piss out of each other. But it works for me.

In addition to all of these pods I also love: The TED Radio Hour, Radio Lab, This American Life, Pod Save America, Strangers, Lore, and anything that NPR puts out.

If you haven't listened to Podcasts yet, why not?

  1. I'd never even heard of a podcast before reading this post but I'm intrigued by the Neil Degrasse Tyson one. It's sounds right up my street and I'll have to look it up. Thank you.

    1. Once you start listening to podcasts it's hard to stop! Enjoy, they cover just about every topic known to man. Loved seeing that you were also part of a closed poly-triad! It's a fun balancing act and a half, isn't it??
